It's twenty minutes to 2pm. That means I have just over 10 hours to write a short script with this rounds genre - Live Action Animation.
And I haven't started anything. No idea. No title. No "FADE IN".
I've had a busy week.
I did write another short, a horror, that I'm pleased with. Unfortunately it doesn't count in my #55Genres challenge. Oh well. I also rewrote two shorts that were in the challenge. LEAVE and HERB. And I had to work on some other short ideas. And all this for possible, future, no big deal at all (sincerely) hopeful opportunities to have at least one of them filmed. So yay for that extremely miniscule good news!
In other news I have figured out a bit more of a Christmas script idea. It's going to be influenced by Under Siege because why not. I'm going to switch every gender in the story, set it on a cargo ship instead of military, turn Tommy Lee Jones terrorists into squabbling, melodramatic an immature terrorists, and some more silly stuff to make it a spoof. It should be fun!
Before I get into today's live blog topic I want to add a note. It might be clear from reading this far but, I don't blog. I mean, really I don't. So any suggestions on how to make this better then please let me know. Do I write as more self deprecating (because I'm a big fool) or do I write these blogs as instructional, helpful guides to writing? (you know I'm not paid to write, right?) or do I go full egotistical and unapologetically pretend I'm amazing? (I've wonderful pretty legs!!) Any tips are welcome!
Now onto the:
LIVE BLOG

As I mentioned, I have a deadline tonight. I need to write a short. Live Action Animation. Think "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". I'm going to get working on it right now, sat in my sitting room
with only Beep sleeping on the couch near me. So let's see how my writing process goes!
How I'm going to do this: I'm going to set up some alarms on my phone. Every 15 minutes I'll take a minute break to update this blog. Hopefully this will work!
14.00PM: I'm off! Fade in. I had to pick some title to start so I just called it Green Scream. No idea what that means. I think because it's live action animation I would have a story with the animation part on a green screen. For any future filmmakers who might wanna film this. See you in 15 minutes!
14:15PM

So....googling green screen and seeing what I can come up with led me to this. No I will not click on green ass man to see what the hell is going on there! Focus! Kevin!
I think I'm going to have the animated character be entirely housed within a box. A box that is delivered to the door of our human character.
14:30PM
I have it started as a box being delivered by like some Amazon worker and the cartoon character inside is just a block, called block of course, and it and the human Betty will have some interaction. I might switch it away from seemingly being that Betty bought this online. Maybe start it as a mysterious man handing this odd box to her. Block then acting like a villain? Like an evil spirit threatening to haunt Betty in her new house. Maybe I can end it as the mysterious man coming back when he realizes he has delivered Block to the wrong house?
14:45PM:
OK Formula One distracted me. Crash happened. Drivers are OK. It was kinda cool. Back to writing!
15:00PM
I've figured out the ending. So writing that out a little. This reminds me a little bit of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes. Kang and Kodos laugh is sticking in my mind now so I'm running with it.
15:15PM
Got distracted a little. Back to writing. I am doing something I never do and naming a specific song for the ending. I don't do it because, if someone filmed this, don't they have to deal with obtaining rights to the song? But for the sake of going easy on myself I'm allowing it. I'll have this done soon!
15:30PM
This has devolved into a petty argument between a cartoon malevolent spirit in a box trying to get the new tenant to let it haunt her. It's not Shakespeare but it will do.
15:45PM

Done! Fade Out. A ridiculous story with three human characters and an cartoon block within a box.
Changing the title to BLOCK PARTY instead. I think it is slightly more relevant than GREEN SCREAM?
It's not the most fascinating story I'll ever come up with but I like the mix of comedy and horror in it. I think there's something to both genres of comedy and horror being similar. Both, to me, trick the brain into expecting one logical situation and then seeing a different result happen. Obviously for comedy this means finding the result as funny because it "shouldn't" have happened. For horror, the result is disturbing because it's not the logical conclusion. What I'm thinking of is: Freddy Krueger, we believe the logical conclusion is that dreams can't physically hurt you...however this film and character shows him physically hurting his victims. That's a disturbing result that flies in the face of logic.
The comedy angle of that, again my view is to take the same "disturbing result\" but go another way, have Freddy Krueger up in court on charges of stalking someone in their dreams. Have a" The People Versus Freddy Krueger" comedy courtroom story. That twists the "reasonable" Freddy Krueger horror and makes it absurd and yet, kinda makes sense?
At least to me. Sorry, that was a bit rambly.
Just remember, I got something written, hooray! Now if only I could objectively look at myself and know whether my writing process is a skill or a characteristic of a madman.
Either way, my writing is pretty much done for today. Next genre will be: ACTION COMEDY - I'm looking forward to it! It's deadline will be 23rd September.
Thanks for reading!
Kevin
